Salazar Announces Final Steps of Cobell Litigation and Settlement



Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar released a statement on the Cobell class action lawsuit settlement that was finalized on November 24, 2012.  He outlined steps that the U.S. government will take to help implement the $3.4 billion settlement.  The settlement includes a $1.5 billion fund to be distributed to class members for accounting and potential trust fund and asset mismanagement claims. The settlement also includes a $1.9 billion fund for a land consolidation program for individual land interests that have “fractionated,” or split among owners, over successive generations.  Learn more at the Department of the Interior website.

Dept. of Justice Announces Eagle Feather Policy

On Friday, the Dept. of Justice announced  a new policy on tribal members use of eagle feathers.  The policy comes after a year of consultations with tribal leaders.  Department officials claim that it clarifies procedure for law enforcement officials while reassuring tribal members that they do not have to fear prosecution for possessing or using eagle feathers for religious and cultural purposes.  Learn more at the related Indian Country Today article or view the policy and fact sheet at the Department of Justice website.
